The Power of Fashion

Fashion is sacred. A religion for which if you install your faith you will find a sense of security.

For years women have relied upon clothes as a security blanket for an awkward situation or to exude confidence when they feel most vulnerable.

With nothing quite like a suit or a pair of killer heels to make you feel good, fashion is something we can reply upon when we are having a bad day.

Put on a power suit with a poufy shoulder and become Victoria Beckham, the style icon or Melanie Griffiths from the 80s film ‘Working Girl’. It really is that easy.

Women like the idea of transformation; it excites and transports us to another dimension where what we want to be is at hand, in the form of a dress with volume, rather than a full mind and body makeover.

Style blogger, Gill Hart believes (and we agree with her) that: “You are never too old to create your own sense of personal style. Just by adding one single wow piece you can make a difference to both your outer look and your inner confidence.”

Fashion is a tool of the brain you see; we use it to better our mood, just like chocolate it sends endorphins to the brain. Whether you’re going out for lunch with the girls, a job interview or simply wanting to look good for work, women are using the re-invention of well structured clothes and shoes to make them feel powerful.

So come on girls, take some of your favourite pieces from your wardrobe, team them with some high heels and wow pieces to see the transformation for yourselves, not only in your look but in your confidence too.

We all know that when we look good, we feel good but now we know that when we feel good we are powerful!

Little Green Lingerie

Emily Addington’s unique new range of lingerie not only looks retro, it’s made of recycled, vintage fabrics. Green AND gorgeously 50s – what’s not to love?

Inside a small coffee shop in Newcastle sat Emily. Wearing black cigarette jeans and pallid blouse she sipped her tea, whilst flicking through samples of material she had picked up on her way. Making the most of her down time, Emily set aside an hour of her busy life, to tell me how she hoped to bring back the feminine 50s.

‘I just love 50s fashion,” Emily gushed. “The clothes have so much style. The lingerie is my true love. I live, dote and dream old fashioned, 50s underwear designs.”

Emily began designing lingerie for a foundation degree at Newcastle College. With a love for pretty underwear and womanly designs, she hoped her lingerie would help her to stand out from the crowd amongst her fellow classmates who were all designing clothes. Choosing to combine her love of 50s underwear and her passion for green living, Emily knew she had a unique idea. “I decided to reuse vintage fabrics,” she explained. “By redesigning vintage dresses, blouses and linens I created unique and bespoke lingerie.”

Graduating in fashion design, Emily stumbled upon her next career move whilst shopping. “I came across a beautiful shop called Flirtatious Boutique around Christmas time in 2007,” she beamed. “I browsed the store and thought my designs would be perfect for its style and theme. So I approached the lady at the counter and to my surprise she agreed to let me work there one day a week in return for stocking my designs.”

Emily began by designing a few pieces of eco lingerie, but soon expanded her collection into swimwear. Her first sale soon followed. “It came after a fashion show, held in ‘As You Like It’ which has a stage in the middle of a restaurant, in Jesmond. Miss Newcastle modeled my lingerie and the next day an upper class gentleman came in to purchase the set for his wife. She had singled it out during the show. I was thrilled,” she said as she took a sip of her tea. “There were so many beautiful lingerie sets shown that night and yet he had came to the boutique specifically for the set I had created.”

It hasn’t always been so easy for Emily, but her gutsy approach and determination can be seen from the offset. She had no idea just how hard the course was going to be and squirms as she tells me of the late nights and long hours it took to get where she is today. “I am such a perfectionist; I can’t produce something that I am not completely happy with. I was always last to finish my pieces at college, but my marks always reflected my efforts which more than made up for it.”
Two years on, Emily has managed to achieve her dream of designing her own clothes. Setting up her own website, her pieces are creating a storm in the green world. Little Green Lingerie was set up just a year ago and allows shoppers to buy something made from vintage fabrics that have been given a second chance in life and created into something new and beautiful for all.

“My website is such a great way of advertising and selling my unique designs as I now have clients in America, all because of www.littlegreenlingerie.com. Without my website I would probably still be selling only a few pieces a month,” she joked.

But Emily is quite the entrepreneur. Continuing to design new pieces for her collection, she also stocks a small boutique in America. This has been a great move for her brand and is now starting to earn a living from something that she thought would only ever be a hobby.

“The boutique love my designs and I am now starting to see some profit from my sales which is great,” she said. Her latest venture is her most exciting. ”The thing I am most thrilled about at the moment is my business deal with an American Online Store called www.getgoretro.com.” ‘Get Go Retro’ is a big name in America and Emily hopes it will promote her designs and give her brand the extra push it needs to make it big in America. “If my pieces sell well for ‘Get Go Retro’ my business will fly, so I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed.”

This summer swimwear has really taken off and she even has a new stockist for this side of her business too. “Forluna are great, they sell vintage inspired swimwear and have a lovely website www.forluna.co.uk. I am so pleased to be working with them but one other collaboration I have been excited about this year is teaming up with FYI accessories for a photo shoot in Maften hall. We got some great pictures for my lingerie and it’s a great way to promote my line with the help of an already well know accessories company,” she said.

But when she is not designing her new pieces and packaging them up for America or her online customers, Emily is trading at wedding fairs and fashion shows to get her name known. “This year I plan to push hard,” she said, adding, “I want to get my brand known so that I can start stocking shops and boutiques across the UK. I am currently designing a line of swimwear for children, as many of my customers have requested matching bikinis for their little girls. I am also hoping to design some ethical boxer shorts for the men out there. A new spring/summer collection for Little Green Lingerie is nearly complete.”

Speaking of her ultimate dream it’s clear that Emily is very ambitious and never stops planning her next move. “In ten years’ time, I would love to have my own artists café. Selling my own designs and other local designers produce, I want to make a difference to the planet with eco friendly produce. ”

Emily has come a long way since she first began in 2001. It’s hard to believe she is only 24 years of age and that she has achieved so much. But she is ready to start taking hold of the reins and driving her business to worldwide success as eco friendly fashion is hard to come by. “I know I have done well to get my business to where it is at today but I want to put the 50s back into the noughties fashion and take the fashion world by storm. A girl can dream though, can’t she?”

oxfamous

Oxfamous!

If you’re not happy being considered materialistic for loving a bit of retail therapy then you’ll love this…For years Annie Lennox has worked with Oxfam to raise awareness of disease and suffering that needs your help but this May she tempts women to get on board with the one thing they can’t resist; shopping!

With one woman’s cast off another woman’s treasure, Oxfam have always been a celebrity secret.  But gone are the days of whispering where your clothes are from as stars shout from the rooftops that they buy and donate to Oxfam… all in aid of charity, of course I know you’re possibly thinking that Oxfam usually plays host to a bin liner full of questionable donations and a rolling staff of silver-haired part-time volunteers. But this May, things are set to change as Oxfam and Selfridges raise the bar, with the launch of a swish pop-up charity shop selling clothes worn by the stars.

The pop-up store is the brainchild of Annie Lennox to raise money for Oxfam projects in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and West Africa and isn’t it great to see clothes make a difference?

Whistles chief executive, Jane Shepherdson, who is also involved, commented: “More than two thirds of the world’s poorest people are women, yet they struggle to be heard. We saw an opportunity to bring together influential women with valuable skills and contacts to try and make a difference to their lives.”

From dresses to accessories, celebrities have raided their closets to ensure that this pop up shop

s one shop you won’t want to walk by.  With Alexa Chung, Elle Macpherson and many more celebrity-wears on sale the store is sure to have something to die for!

Sarah Farquhar, head of retail at Oxfam, believes the two retail brands are a great fit, saying: “Selfridges sells the extraordinary, it sells the most exclusive inspirational products but as a store it is also incredibly inclusive.”

With designer pieces and personal artifacts each item will have to be considered to be an investment for the future with its rather heavy price tag.  A pair of Jimmy Choos may go for as little as £75 and considering Elle Macpherson has worn them they are priceless!

So ladies, when you next feel guilty for buying, head to Oxfam and remember what role clothes are playing for those less fortunate around the world.  You can spend with guilt free conscience and even do your bit for charity.

I Know Who You Are By Your Wardrobe!

In an ever-growing style obsesses world it seems that what we wear no longer goes unnoticed.

It could be said that when we start relying upon certain shops and designers for the staples of our wardrobe, we begin to develop a look of our own. But by opting to buy the same cut and colour in our clothes do we begin to lose our personality as people begin to judge you by your clothes?

It seems that according to dress we all tend to have certain preconceived ideas of new people.  If they wear a dress we consider that is not in the colour of the season or the shape that had just been taken down the catwalk we assume they do not care about fashion or rely upon it to feel good.  But should we see head to toe fashion walking down the street we make think that they are hiding behind their clothes or that they take themselves too seriously.

But who are we to judge?  Aren’t clothes simply something of a necessity?  I believe not.

No longer do we judge people on their manners and personality but often we make up or minds by what they wear and many of us are unaware that what we wear is being judged.

Many celebrities can be pin pointed in our minds by a dress that they wore for an awards show or a pair of killer heels that helped them to lose their balance outside a nightclub, but their names are not so familiar.

At Silhouette we wondered how these three celebrities would feel knowing that what they wear allows us to spot them by their clothes before we even see their face.

But I ask you, our readers, how you would feel if all you were remembered for was your clothes?  Clothes are powerful and often they are dismissed without seeing their true capacity.

A smart black dress can impart power and change the way we are seen.  By changing our dress we too can become the celebrity we look up to.  By taking the time to define their key looks we will be able to develop their style or even find the encouragement to show off our own.

The Kissaway Trail

Denmark’s The Kissaway Trail are not your usual indie rock band.  If you’re expecting some dreary-haired skinny youth strumming a guitar and sweeping his greasy fringe across his spotty forehead, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

With heartfelt voices and emotional lyrics you would be forgiven for thinking that they use music is a form of counselling to excrete inner demons and escape the hefty therapy bill.

Using lyrics to tell their story the Danish lads go from happy go lucky to loss and loathing with their track 61.  Reportedly referring to the number of days it took for one of the members to find out about a loved ones illness the song has a lot to offer.

With good looks and lush melodies the Danish group are a new alternative to the funny looking, skinny-jean-wearing acts that currently reign in the charts.  The two singers in the band may have the typical indie voice but what comes out of it, is what makes all the difference.  Singing about life and its unexpected twists and turns this indie group have used their misfortunes to their advantage producing music that actually tells a story.

Both sincere and endearing The Kissaway Trail bring flourishing melodies to your ears with their new take on an overpopulated world of so-called indie music.   Admittedly in some songs they all sound slightly bipolar, jumping from mood to mood but with SLUT and Daniel Johnston as their named influences it’s not hard to see why they spark images of Johnny Depp in Charlie and The Chocolate factory.  Although eerie and dark at times they instil a sense of security into their audience that their music always ends on a high despite its dark depths and meandering along the way.

With anthem style sound the five-piece shout  ‘yeah’ in union at every opportunity but in their defence it does give a sense of togetherness. With perfectly played instruments from guitar to piano this indie alternative are not to be missed.  With an individual slant on the English language the band advise you to have a listen if not just to learn some new anthem style phrases to put in your indie rock vocabulary box.  Unlike most bands, these guys have been able to complement the polyphonic sounds with guitar and piano, which makes for a sound unlike any other. The strong vocal duo ensures that the lads take the band to the forefront of modern thinking music where lyrical sound overturns jerky new wave guitars.

My Little Beauty

“My Little Beauty could be the salon of the future!” Explains Kerry Lewis, director of My Little Beauty. “This salon offers much needed help to worn out women everywhere, treatments in the most contemporary travelling location, I think we have found something that keeps up with our fast track lifestyles.”

As us ladies continue to pull in our belts with regards to our spending, it takes something extra special for us to try something new. So far however it seems beauty treatments have remained a basic human right but I wanted to know if there was anything out there, which was worthy of our precious pennies?

My Little Beauty sounded fabulous, but as I made my way to its location I was worried my excitement might be overrated and it would let me down. Based inside a classic 1962 American Airstream trailer, the premises are in fact quite a beauty. As I made my way up its three small steps (I had flashbacks of E.T and Elliott stepping aboard for the first time) I opened the door with caution. I needn’t have, it was spectacular!

Inside were nail bars, a spray tanning booth and a waxing bed to complete the fully functional beauty salon. But as I walked around I was told that this was not all the airstream had to offer. With treatments complete the table and nail bars can be folded away to reveal an area for karaoke with a flat screen TV and disco lights. Dare I ask…is there dancing?

Kerry smiled when assuring me that dancing was a must on board. “Oh yes, there is definitely dancing. The last hen night we did was a pyjama party so we parked up on the drive, 15 women piled in… we had pedicures going on, manicures and eye brow waxing but once they were done we folded the tables away. Then the women really have a good time because we have karaoke microphones and they are up singing in their pyjamas. Its great, the clients love it.”

It’s her fun and unique business that got Kerry shortlisted in the ‘Best New Business’ category of the annual Women Into the Network awards. The awards, now in their 10th year and sponsored by Business Link, have been refocused to include two brand new categories that reward both pre-start up and inspirational entrepreneurs.

As I sat talking to Kerry her enthusiasm for her business and its success is obvious. She is passionate about the service she provides and wants to give customers the best experience possible. So just how did it feel to be recognised for her hard work?

“Well its fantastic really isn’t it! I am a one-woman show, I have had the ideas, I have had the stress and I’m now being recognised for all my efforts. Its very nerve wracking, but I don’t think there is anyone in the final thirty who have a similar business to mine, so fingers crossed. It would be the cherry on the cake to win.”

Listening to stories of broken down boilers and flooding toilets, I realised Kerry had come a long way since she first opened. The packed out diary was the proof. But I couldn’t help but wonder what gave her this remarkable idea and whether the tale behind it was anything as wonderful as the ones she had been telling me.

Having always loved beauty, Kerry decided she needed her own premises. But should she buy a shop and spend her days looking at only those four walls or would she better travelling to client’s houses and offices? Obviously, she decided upon the latter and began looking for a vehicle. Originally playing with the name urban beauty and a pink and gold horse box nothing felt right until one day she joked, she found the answer to her prayers in the form of a film.

“I came home, sat down and my kids had a film on the telly and it was an airstream and I thought oh yeah, what are they called, you know when you just know straight away that, that is what you want. So I got my laptop out and typed in shiny silver caravan and they started popping up and the rest is history as they say.”

The airstream itself came from Kansus, which is where the nickname Dorothy came from. Had she opted for a horsebox, I’m not quite sure it would have been as successful.

Whilst I’m there, she has to leave me three times to take appointments. Upon her return she apologises but explains that, as with any new business, you don’t get a minute to yourself and any calls could be possible appointments.

“I target certain business parks where I know there is going to be a lot of women.” Kerry explained. “They use their breaks at work to come for eyebrow waxing or to get their nails done. Its great, they all say how convenient it is.”

Dorothy, as she calls her, is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some pampering, not only do you get a unique service but the convenience of her coming to you, wherever that may be!
“Last night I was in Dishforth so I took three beauty girls with me who work as and when I need them. It is an eighty-mile return, which means that we had to charge a call out fee. We have to cover our costs because it is so far away but they were happy to pay the fee.”

The bespoke seating area is the first thing you see as you step into the trailer, which is why Kerry wanted the wow factor for her seats. Laughing as she tells me of her design plans, Kerry always knew what she wanted the inside of her salon to look like.

“The décor was a huge part of my business plan as it was its main selling point along with the vehicle of course. So I got the seats made to look authentic, I wanted the theme to work throughout the salon and in-keeping with the type of trailer we had chose to use.”

Not just aimed at women, My Little Beauty is very popular with the children Kerry says this side of the business is just getting bigger and bigger.

“We have done 75 kids parties in the last year. I would say we have nailed it with the children. Every week we have a children’s party and often we have to turn people away and say that we are fully booked. Durham yesterday, Redcar last week and last week was the first week that we have had three children’s parties in one day. Its unbelievable!”

Not content with allowing other salons to catch up with her or her ideas, Kerry has teamed up with an events management company to focus on a new themed night called ‘Beauty and the Butler Parties’. Immediately she had my attention and I had to ask more about this new event.

Beauty and the Butler parties Kerry gushed basically mean “the ladies getting makeovers and the butlers pouring champagne and doing a bit of singing with the girls. It’s a two hour party and we think it is going to be very popular.”

With lost to offer My Little Beauty is already thinking about another trailer and the possibility of branching out with different themes across the country. Its fair to say that Kerry Lewis has shaken the beauty world with her iconic vehicle and all that is left for us to do, is jump aboard the legendary airstream and indulge in a little beauty therapy of our own.

Is it time to set free my summer wardrobe just yet?

If like me, you vac-packed your summer wardrobe back in October you will be finding it increasingly difficult to find anything suitable to wear whilst this none fashion friendly weather continues.

Today I found myself getting more and more annoyed as I stared into my wardrobe to find nothing but dark dreary colours staring back at me. It seems the only bit of salvation I was able to find was a white frill t-shirt from last season’s nautical trend, so I went full steam ahead and layered that under my navy blazer…it didn’t look half bad!

But what exactly should we be wearing when you leave your house in the morning in bright sunshine and return to find it is pouring with rain?

Well I’ve decided that designers must actually know what they are talking about…so when Nicole Farhi showed layering at London Fashion Week – I should have listened!

With a quick glance at Topshop online I’ve found that I really needn’t have struggled as all this layering lark is all there ready to buy! With lots of long vests, slouchy cardigans and dresses, with a quick trip in there I’ll be sorted.

So if like me you are having no luck with your current wardrobe… get up in that loft and free your spring/summer wardrobe and take a tip from those that know what they are doing. Go on girls, get layering!

Stella McCartney… a life without leather or fur.

Stella McCartney is not just the daughter of a rock star but a designer for the elite.

Since 1995 when she debuted her first collection McCartney has offered an alternative to a somewhat ‘copy-cat’ fashion world.

With eight years under her belt since her first show at Paris, McCartney was back at the Carreau du Temple to show her ready to wear collection for fall 2009 yesterday. It was just as we expected; breathtaking. Using knitted silk and perforated faux-leather for her skin tight, thigh high boots and jackets, McCarney who is a strict vegetarian broke all the rules of the fashion world. Leather and fur are the stilts to which designers lean on, and without them the majority would fail to impress fashionistas looking for that something ‘fabulous’.

McCartney on the other hand, did this with ease and now we all want our hands on the new collection, proving leather is not a necessity to be a fashion designer as others such as Karl Lagerfeld insist is.
But just how does McCartney manage to turn the head’s of those who want the impossible?

McCartney comes from a famous family where nothing was impossible and anything she wanted she could have, but fashion is something she knew she would have to work for. The world of fashion is picky, cut throat and sometimes down right honest and she knew if she put a foot wrong it could have been the end of her career, so choosing not to use leather and fur in an industry that surrounds both was ridiculous.

But McCartney never seems fazed by the critics and continues to invent and recreate the looks of the season in her own ethical way. With only two seasons collection to speak of McCartney was appointed as Creative Director at Chloe back in 1997, they saw what we all see now, talent and determination. McCartney has come along way.

McCartney has been put on a pedestal for her individuality and strength in stepping outside of what is expected of a designer.

Her fall collection was bang on trend teasing new life out of ideas already hovering in the style spectrum showing that not only is McCartney a leader of fashion, she is an observer and knows that in the midst of a recession, wear-again fashion is what we want.

McCartney has been able to capture a look in her new collection that is beginning to take shape as we speak. With smooth edges and polished surfaces, the style curve has caught up with looks McCartney spotted and championed years ago and she is being awarded for it.

As Bags and shoes are traditionally fashions must have items, the un-educated of us may wonder how she manages to remain at the forefront of this sector without the use of leather and fur, but the answer is that ‘she just does’. Motivated by principle and commercial concerns, McCartney is determined to prove her ethics are no barrier to creating must-have accessories and this fall will be no different.

Last year Stella McCartney came into bloom when she collaborated with Adidas and had huge success. Everyone who was anyone jogged in one of her tracksuits and if they didn’t, they are now aware they should have! So as the Stella McCartney name continues to soar, what next for a designer who has managed to do so much in so little time?

As Paris salute McCartney for her determination to create fashion with morals, we at InJournalism wait with bated breath to see what she has up her sleeve for us next!
